SUSTAINABILITY

Womad EARTH STATION will be implementing a number of ‘green strategies’ over the next few years following in WOMADelaide’s footsteps.

GREENING AUSTRALIA – CARBON OFFSET
To kick off the Sustainability policy Womad EARTH STATION will be partnering with Australia’s largest environmental organisation, Greening Australia, to offset carbon emissions from this event through local biodiverse tree plantings.

Over the past 7 years, no other organization in the country has planted more trees for environmental repair. Greening Australia provides expertyly managed, large-scale tree planting, which has been proven to offset CO2 emissions, recover landscapes and nurtiure biodiversity.

Greening Australia, with the support of Canopy, guarantees that every tree planted for carbon offset will remain in the ground for over 100 years. What’s more, Greening Australia is fully compliant with the Kyoto Climate Control Treaty and the NSW Greenhouse Gas Abatement Scheme.

WASTE MANAGEMENT
Womad Earth Station will have a Waste Management policy that will aim to minimise the waste produced at the Event. We recycle, compost organic waste and aim to divert as much waste from landfill as possible.

There will be an onsite ‘waste compound’ where much of the waste will be sorted prior to it being taken away.
Patrons are asked in printed materials and by stage MCs to carefully use the clearly marked bins on site.

Womad EARTH STATION will use a three-bin system to collect:

-       Biodegradable waste
-       Recycling
-       General waste to landfill

WATER & TOILETS
The men’s urinals at Womad EARTH STATION use water saving technology to ensure that no water is required for flushing.

Specially-designed cubes keep the urinals clean and hygienic without the need for water. This will save a great deal of water over the course of the festival.

All toilets use recycled toilet paper.

STALLS
Stalls have been selected for the Event based on their commitment to use local, organic and sustainable practices and produce where available.

All food stalls chosen are businesses based in SA, to ensure that the food miles are kept to a minimum.

All cups, plates, crockery, serviettes and any items sold in packaging are fully biodegradable, meaning they will break down over time and be returned to the earth.
